Can't go anywhere without tunes? That means packing your MP3 player. Need to stay in touch with your peeps at all times? Better grab your cell. Can't stop twitching away on Super Mario 3? Then you'll need to bring along your Game Boy Advance. And maybe you've got a PDA to keep track of your busy social life. Once you've stuffed all this stuff onto your person, you start to look like a 21st century pack mule. So how do you do accomplish all of this media and comms without weighing yourself down with a Best Buys' worth of gadgets? You get one super device that combines all of these functions.
|
If
your life revolves around communication, you'll love the Treo 600 ($400-$500 with service activation). It runs on the Palm operating system, so it's
infinitely expandable to do whatever you want. Need homework tracking software?
You got it. Need a scientific calculator? You can add that too. Want to be able
to edit Word docs and put together a sophisticated presentation right on your
handheld? Done. And because it's a cell phone as well, you can access the Web
for browsing, email, messaging, even AOL chat. The Treo makes it all easier by
including a tiny keyboard, perfect for light data entry. You can even take a snapshot
with the internal color camera and send it to any email address without lifting
a second thumb. Oh yeah, and it makes phone calls too!
If
gaming's your thing, the Tapwave Zodiac ($299 for the 32MB model;
$399 for 128MB) is perhaps the best way to satisfy that craving while keeping
options open for doing some work between game sessions. Also designed around the
Palm OS, the Zodiac can do all the productive things that a normal Palm can do,
from word processing to Web surfing. The Zodiac has a brilliant 3.8-inch screen
that is laid out sideways for optimal game play. It also has built-in Bluetooth,
the local wireless standard, which means that you can do head-to-head gaming against
other Palm machines and access the Web through your Bluetooth-enabled cell phone.
It has two Secure Digital expansion slots for adding memory, a camera, or WiFi
attachments. While there aren't many popular games yet for the Zodiac, they're
on the way.
The
Motorola MPx200 is a dream machine for anyone with a gadget-lust
and a thin pocketbook. The phone is designed around Microsoft's Pocket PC operating
system, which means that it can not only make phone calls but also easily handle
email and Web browsing. It is also capable of playing some top-notch games and
playing MP3s from the SD memory card. And, of course, it can handle all your homework
notes and class schedules, too. Best of all, because it's soon to be replaced
with a slightly upgraded model, the MPx200 is currently being offered free with
service activation through several providers.
These devices may seem like they cost a lot of money ($400 for a game machine?), but getting everything in one unit means you don't have to spend a bunch of money on multiple devices. Plus it means more room in your backpack for things like school books. You remember those, right? Well, unfortunately there's nothing that replaces those, at least not yet.
