You're lost! You thought you knew where you were going, but you took a wrong turn somewhere and you're seriously not in Kansas anymore. You and Toto can go ahead and calm down. If you have a cell phone, you'll be on your way to the Emerald City in no time, thanks to a free cell phone service you probably don't even know about. While you're on the horn, you can also order movie tickets, make a restaurant reservation, have your email read to you, as well as your horoscope. How cool is that? |
Tellme Networks (1-800-555-TELL)
Whip out your celly and enter this 800 number in your address book right now. It's your ticket out of Munchkin Land (or any other gnarly neighborhood you might find yourself in). This free service has been around for years, and it just keeps getting better. One of the main attractions is the turn-by-turn directions. You tell the friendly female robot where you are and where you want to go, and she tells you how to get there. She waits patiently until you say "Next" before telling you your next move.
The directions feature would be enough to recommend Tellme as an address book must-have, but there are many more offerings on the service. From the voice-navigated menu, you can choose Weather, News, Sports, Horoscopes, call a Taxi, the list goes on. Two other awesome features are the restaurant information/reviews and the local movie listings. After you find the movie theater and showing that you're looking for, you can even pre-order your tickets over the phone! Who needs a high-priced cell phone Internet service when all of this is only an 800 number away?
My Yahoo!
This service is only free for the first month, but after that, it's a mere $4.95/mo. What you get for that is the ability to hear your email and all of the contents of your personalized My Yahoo! content read to you over the phone. You also get a voice mailbox that anyone can call in to leave messages. And, you can hear your Yahoo! address book entries spoken to you and you can send voice-to-text emails to anyone in your book. If you use My Yahoo! and Yahoo! Mail, this service is definitely worth trying out. You can even forward mail from other accounts to your Yahoo! Mail to have it read to you. This is really handy if you know you're going to be away from a computer for a while and need to know what mail you're getting.
Vindigo
If you have a cell phone equipped with short messaging (SM-enabled), there are a number of cool apps you can download from Vindigo Studios. They offer Mobile MapQuest, Celebrity Now (and celebrity-spotting service), a movie guide, and other useful and fun services. These apps only work on certain phones offered by certain providers, so you have to go to their site to see if your phone/provider are listed. The apps are free, but standard text messaging fees will apply.
Local Bus Schedules
You're either on the bus or ...ah... you missed the bus. If you live in a city or town, you likely have a bus service. What you may also have (but not know about) is a voice-driven phone service that you can call to get the bus schedule. In some big cities, you can even say which stop you're at and where you're headed, and a friendly robot (again with the robots), will tell you which buses you need to look for and when the next one is coming. To find out if your bus service has something like this, visit their Web site or call them. Of course, you can always just put the bus company's number in your cell phone address book and call them for the schedule, but then, you have to talk to an actual human, and they're usually not nearly as friendly and perky and the robo-operators.
While having full Web access on your cell phone is great, the surfing charges can really add up. Luckily there are these free (or inexpensive) services that offer many of the features you'd go to the Net to provide while you're on the run.
